Important Information for Rising 6th Grade Students
Before your child can enter middle school, they must have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) vaccination, if at least five years have passed since the last tetanus shot.  For a full explanation and information on where to get free immunizations, please click here.
RCPS+ is in full swing
RCPS+ is underway and students are already getting down to business.  They're seeing plenty of web-based computer learning, field experiences, and fun activities.  The program is designed to be motivational, engaging, and hands-on for students.  There is a heavy emphasis on reading, writing, mathematics, history, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Pay raise for RCPS Employees
The Roanoke City School Board has approved a 2% pay raise for all RCPS Employees for the 2013-2014 School Year.  All employees will receive a step increase.  If the step increase is less than 2%, then the raise will be 2%.
When does school start?
We realize you are just starting your summer vacation but it is never too early to start preparing for the next school year. Mark your calendars, the first day of school is August 19, 2013.  Convocation for teachers will take place August 12th at the Roanoke Civic Center. 
Art Camp
The Taubman Museum of Art should take note, it may have a future artist in its midst.  Last week, RCPS held its annual Art Camp at the Taubman.  The first session had about 15 middle school students particpating.  They made their own art project; a community map of sorts that documents places that are important to them.   More pics, www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Farewell Chairman David Carson
He is a great leader and will be missed.  That was said over and over again at David Carson's last School Board Meeting.  Mr. Carson was presented with a framed resolution from the School Board as well as gavel!  How appropriate since he is becoming a Circuit Court Judge.  Mr. Carson says he may be gone from the Board but he will continue to be a presence in the schools.
Leadership Conference 2013
For decades, Roanoke City Public Schools has held a Leadership Conference for principals and other administrators.  The goal is to look at new and current approaches that will take the school system to the next level.  The 3 day conference, held at William Fleming High School, focused on the latest technology in the classroom, what's new in data and testing, and techniques that work. 
Community Meeting for Patrick Henry Principal
More than 50 people came out to meet the two finalists for principal at Patrick Henry High School.  The audience had a chance to ask each candidate a serious of questions. The finalists are Kathy Duncan, Director of ROTEC, and Joe Jablonski, Vice Principal at PH.
Promoting healthy living
Horton Park was the place to be Saturday.  The PATH Coalition held a Community Day for Hurt Park Elementary students.  They were treated to plenty of fun activities and a bag full of fresh fruits and vegetables.  The goal of the event was to promote healthy living.  It was so successful there are already plans to hold another Community Day next year.
Virginia Heights gets the sledgehammer
Virginia Heights Elementary has had a modular unit for nearly 15 years, not anymore.  Thursday, the principal and teachers gathered to watch the demolition of the modular unit.  Beforehand, they each got to swing the sledgehammer.  Construction will soon begin on 5 new classrooms, a library, a multi-purpose room, and an art room.  The $2.4 Million project is scheduled to be finished by the first day of school.
City of Roanoke honors David Carson
This was David Carson's last Commencement as chairman of the Roanoke City School Board.  Carson will step down in June to become a Circuit Court Judge.  During Patrick Henry High School's Graduation, Roanoke Mayor David Bowers presented Carson with a key to the City of Roanoke.  We appreciate Mr. Carson's years of service with RCPS.

We tip our hats to the Class of 2013 on a job well done!   William Fleming and Patrick Henry High Schools held Commencement Ceremonies at the Roanoke Civic Center.  Fleming handed out 301 diplomas, PH 416.  We want to congratulate all the graduates.  Plenty of pictures at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Governor's Summer Residential Program
It will be a summer like no other for Joseph Lash and Ben Polk of Patrick Henry High School.  They both attend the Governor's School.  They've been accepted into the Governor's School Residential Program.  It provides gifted high school juniors and seniors, from across Virginia, with intensive educational experiences.  Congratulations to both for being selected for this prestigious program.
Forest Park Academy holds Graduation Ceremonies
You can now call them graduates!  Exactly 100 seniors picked up their diplomas at Forest Park Academy's Graduation at the Jefferson Center.  Forest Park is a school that helps students who have dropped out or are in danger of leaving school.  "Forest Park Academy is all about second chances," said Superintendent Rita Bishop.
Public art created by RCPS students
The next time you drive down Williamson Road, you'll want to pay close attention.  Breckinridge Middle Art students have created a sculpture for the Williamson Road Library.  It is a 7 foot movable cube made out of 150 individual paintings of street signs.  More than 130 students worked on the project.  It will be located in front of the library for the next 18 months.
End of the school year fun
The last week of school is all about fun.  Bouncy inflatables, dunking booths, and limo rides are just some of the activities going on, before the last day of school Thursday.  We are trying to get to as many events as we can. Belk Service Day at Preston Park
Preston Park Elementary got a makeover of sorts.  About 55 employees from Roanoke's two Belk stores volunteered at the school last week.  They built picnic tables, book shelves, pulled weeds, and painted murals.  Belk Employees donated their time, the materials, and books for the school.  This is all part of Belk's 125th anniversary.  A big thank you to these volunteers.
Senior Day at Patrick Henry & William Fleming
Friday was all about the seniors at Patrick Henry and William Fleming High Schools.  PH held a picnic at Salem Stadium, complete with hamburgers and hot dogs as well as a mechanical bull.  WF held a cookout inside the cafeteria.  It was supposed to be in the stadium but the high winds forced it inside.  More photos, www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Remembering a beloved teacher
She was known for her kind heart and for mentoring countless young teachers.  Mary Ann Robinson passed away this school year.  She taught at Highland Park Elementary for 24 years.  Friday, teachers and students gathered to plant a tree in her honor.  Congregations In Action (CIA) donated the tree, which is located in front of the school.
Anti-Bullying Poster Contest Winners
How do you stop bullying?  Who better to ask than our students.  Each year, RCPS holds an Anti-Bullying Poster Contest for the elementary and middle schools.  This year's winners are Sarah Jones of Grandin Court Elementary and Jasmine Allinson (pictured) of Jackson Middle School.  Their posters will be reproduced and displayed in our schools.  More pics, www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Young Authors
How do you get published at a young age?  Just ask the 1st graders in Michele Strayer's class at RAMS.  The students worked together to research, write, and illustrate a book about birds.  The goal is to get these kids excited about writing and for them to be proud of being published.  The students read the book to their parents at school last Friday.
Personal Finance pays off for Patrick Henry High School
Patrick Henry High School is one of the Top 100 Best High Schools for teaching Personal Finance.  The announcement was made at the New York Stock Exchange by "Working in Support of Education (w!se)."  This is the first year for the rankings.  The major factor was the average score on the Financial Literacy Certification Test.
Teacher wins the Lottery....kinda
Talk about some really good odds. Garden City Elementary Teacher Matthew Miller has won the 2013 Virginia Lottery Super Teacher award.  Miller found out during a surprise school assembly.  Virginia Lottery Executive Director, Paula Otto, (left) presented Miller (right) with a $2,000 cash prize and a $2,000 classroom credit from The Supply Room Companies.  Miller says he was completely surprised.
Patrick Henry student wins B'nai B'rith Award
Congratulations to Caroline Brailsford of Patrick Henry High School.  She is this year's female winner of the B'nai B'rith Award.  "I'm truly honored and humbled to receive this prestigious award.  I'm so happy to be able to represent PH," said Brailsford.  Caroline will attend UNC next year.
Retirement Dinner 2013
They put in countless years of service with RCPS and Monday night we said thanks.  The school system held its annual retirement dinner at the Roanoke Country Club.  More than 30 soon to be retirees were honored.  Mary Robinson, who passed away this year, had 39 years of service! Baccalaureate Sunday
They've worked hard all four years of high school and Sunday was a day to honor their achievements.  Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School each held a Baccalaureate Service.  It was a chance to hand out awards, scholarships, and congratulate these outstanding graduates. Capping Ceremony at William Fleming
William Fleming High School has a tradition that goes back to the 1990's.  Before graduation, the Senior Class has a Capping Ceremony.  It's a chance for the soon to be graduates to have a loved one or someone special place their cap on their head.  That special someone can be a parent, sibling, friend, and even a teacher.  More pictures, www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Thanking our volunteers
The thank yous continue.  For the last month, many of our schools have been holding events to show their appreciation to our volunteers.  On Friday, it was Lincoln Terrace Elementary's turn with a breakfast. We calculate that we have more than a 1,000 volunteers working in all of our schools.  Whoa!  Thanks again to all your hard work, your dedication, and making a difference in a child's life.
Learning about water conservation
We use it everyday and don't think much about it.  But do you know how much water you waste?  The Western Virginia Water Authority holds programs throughout our schools to teach students about water conservation.  Last week, 3rd graders from Monterey Elementary visited the water treatment plant and went on a nature hike at Carvin's Cove, Roanoke's main water source. 
Vella Wright announces her retirement
It is never easy to say good-bye.  After 29 years with RCPS, the last 6 as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Vella Wright will retire this summer.  "The most rewarding career that I can imagine is working with students, teachers, and principals who influence them.  I have enjoyed my experiences and encourage young people to become educators because there is no better job," said Wright.
Pizza Party!
What's better than eating pizza?  Making your own!  Pre-kindergarten students from Virginia Heights Elementary got to do just that at Grace's Pizza.  They poured cheese on their pizza and then enjoyed it once it came out of the oven.  The students are visiting different businesses in the Grandin Village area to get to know their community.  A photo gallery at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Patrick Henry is one of the best high schools in the country
This is a good time of year for Patrick Henry High School.  Newsweek's "Best High Schools in America" ranks PH at 1,868.  The Washington Post is also out with its annual list of "America's Most Challenging High Schools."  PH ranks 397 nationwide, 33 in Virginia.  Congratulations to the teachers, administrators, parents, and students!
Feeding the Mind
You need a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast before you take the SOL's.  With that in mind, Wasena Elementary's PTA makes breakfast for the first day of testing for each grade.  Last week, it was 4th grade's turn.  It gets students off on the right foot and rewards them for their hard work.  The meal includes a bagel, fruit, and juice.  Photo gallery at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Children's Book Week
Read any good books lately?  This week is Children's Book Week.  It started in 1919 and is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country.  Many of our schools have special reading programs. For example, the student pictured has read more than 400 books this year at Westside Elementary.  What is your favorite children's book?  A Dr. Seuss book?  Clifford the Big Red Dog? 
Chicks take over Grandin Court
They've been incubating chick eggs for weeks, and now kindergarteners at Grandin Court Elementary are seeing the results of their hard work.  The eggs recently hatched and this week they got to hold the chicks for the first time.  While outside, the students put out water for the chicks, but instead they used it for a bath! 
Rita Bishop named Virginia's Superintendent of the Year
You read right, Dr. Rita Bishop is this year's Virginia Superintendent of the Year.  She was selected at the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) conference at the Hotel Roanoke.  Dr. Bishop will now represent the Commonwealth of Virginia in the National Superintendent of the Year competition in February 2014. SOL Strong
SOL testing begins this week for elementary and middle schools.  Before the big test, many schools are holding events to get students pumped.  Several had SOL pep rallies with a theme, like Survivor.  Round Hill Elementary had a victory parade. Crystal Spring Elementary (pictured) gave out free Maggie Moo's ice cream.  Good luck to everyone! 
Planting the seed at Hurt Park Elementary
How do we stop childhood obesity?  You may want to look at Hurt Park Elementary.  Positive Actions Towards Health (PATH) has funded a garden at the school.  It exposes students to fruits/vegetables they might not normally see.  They also get to plant in the garden, which leads to increased interest and desire to try these foods. This week's rain should help!
RCPS+ exceeds expectations
You never know what to expect in the first year but if enrollment numbers are any indication,  RCPS+ is going to be a huge hit.  We set a goal of 2,000 students for the first year.  After the deadline, we now have more than 2,500 signed up!  RCPS+ is a summer enrichment program for Roanoke City students in Kindergarten thru 8th grade.   For more information, click here
School Nurse Day
They are there with a band-aid, a smile, and are always there when you need them.  Wednesday was School Nurse Day, a time to recognize school nurses for their dedication and hard work.  There are 74,000 school nurses nationwide.  They are being acknowledged for advancing the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievements of all students by providing a critical safety net for children.
Food for thought
This is School Nutrition Employee Week, a time to acknowledge the hard work of food service employees.  Did you know here in Roanoke City, they serve 9,200 lunches and 4,100 breakfasts each day?  They often arrive at the school at 6:30 in the morning, follow strict federal nutrition guidelines, and make a pretty good meal.  We tip our hats to you!

Exclusive tour of new Center in the Square
Fishburn Park Elementary was the first school group to tour the newly renovated Center in the Square.  Students got to see workers release clown fish into the new 5,000 gallon fish tank.  Fishburn adopted two fish and got the chance to name them during their visit.   The new Center in the Square will open to the public May 18th. www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Patrick Henry Band to play at Pearl Harbor
Just one high school band from Virginia will perform at the 2014 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Hawaii.  Patrick Henry High School's Band has been selected as an official Battleship state ambassador participant.  PH was recommended to the committee anonymously. If you would like to donate money for the trip, contact Band Teacher Alex Schmitt at aschmitt@rcps.info
Forest Park Academy reaches a major milestone
One reason Roanoke's graduation rate continues to go up is Forest Park Academy.  It is a school to help students who are struggling or previously dropped out.  Now in its 5th year, Forest Park has graduated more than 500 students!  By the end of the summer, it expects to be close to 700.  Principal Eric Anderson believes individualized instruction is a big reason for the school's success.  
Banding together at Morningside
Call it Survivor: Middle School.  5th graders at Morningside Elementary made survivor bracelets.  They will be used by students to help them band together as they transition to middle school at Stonewall Jackson next year.  You will notice the bracelets are in Jackson's school colors. 
Teacher Appreciation
We can't thank our teachers enough.  With that in mind, this week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. At Grandin Court Elementary, students brought in bright beautiful spring flowers for their teachers.  The PTA provided a nice sit down lunch complete with homemade mac and cheese as well as gourmet cupcakes for dessert!
SOL Support
Taking the SOL's can be very scary, especially if it is your first time.  Students at Roanoke Academy for Mathematics & Science (RAMS) received some encouragement before the big test.  Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church sent letters of support to each of the 3rd graders.  They will start testing next week.  More photos at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
SOL Spirit Week

Noteworthy Music Festival ends on a high note

Fairview students have the right VIBE
Reading books pays-off!  Just ask the students at Fairview Elementary, enrolled in the Accelerated Reading Program.  Students who read 10 books in the past month and passed a test got a special treat Friday.  They got to attend a dance party hosted by a VIBE radio DJ.  230 students danced their shoes off in the gym.  They read a total of 2,300 books.  Whoa!
RCPS students take part in Little Feet Meet

RCPS selects 2013 Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Daniel Kuehl of James Breckinridge Middle School.  He is the 2013 Teacher of the Year!  Daniel received $1,000 from Lumos Networks, $500 from WDBJ-TV, $150 worth of car supplies from Advance Auto, flowers from George's Flowers, and passes from Virginia Dare Cruises.  Congratulations to Daniel and all the nominees! 
Middle School Summer Art Camp
Looking for something to do this summer?  RCPS is holding a Middle School Summer Art Camp at the Taubman Museum of Art.  Students will explore a wide variety of art techniques and even take part in their own art show!  The camp is for rising 7th and 8th graders.  June 10-13 is for Addison, Breckinridge, and Jackson.  July 29-August 1 is for Madison and Woodrow Wilson.  The deadline to apply is May 3, 2013. Honoring our volunteers
National Volunteer Week was a big success.  It highlighted people doing extraordinary things through service.  Many schools held special events to say thanks to our volunteers.  Wednesday, Highland Park Elementary had an appreciation breakfast.  During the school year, volunteers put in more than 5,000 hours at that school alone, wow!.  A big thank you to all of the volunteers at all of our schools. 
Fishburn Park celebrates Earth Week 2013
The 4th annual Earth Week celebration at Fishburn Park Elementary is now over.  The school had a whole week of activities including hybrid cars, a GPS course, live animals, and a walk-a-thon.  This year's focus was "Goodwill for Earth."  The school also raised money for the Mill Mountain Zoo. 
Congressman Goodlatte honors Jackson Middle students
Internet safety is a top priority of Congressman Bob Goodlatte.  Monday, he spoke to students at Stonewall Jackson Middle School who have participated in the "My Digital Life Program."  It covers a wide range of topics including privacy, cyberbullying, and maintaining a responsible social networking profile. Congressman Goodlatte reminded students nothing posted online is private and it stays there forever.
Wasena celebrates Arbor Day.
It is a day set aside to encourage people to plant and care for trees.  Wasena Elementary held a big Arbor Day celebration Friday.  The school held an assembly where students sang songs, gave presentations, and had a chance to meet Smokey Bear.  Valley Beautiful donated 7 dogwood trees that have already been planted around the school.  More pictures at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Angry Birds converge on Virginia Heights
Students at Virginia Heights Elementary hit the pavement Friday for the school's annual PTA walkathon.  Students got pledges and then walked outside the school for 30 minutes.  This year's theme was Angry Birds!  The PTA will use the money raised to buy library books and instructional technology resources.  More photos, www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Signing Day at Patrick Henry
They've made their mark at Patrick Henry High School, now they're taking that talent to the next level.  Last Thursday was Signing Day at PH.  Tricia Jesse (left) will play soccer at Washington & Lee next year, Caroline Brailsford will do track at UNC, and Jonathan Gomez will swim at Saint Peters University.  Congrats to all of these outstanding athletes.
Take me out to the ballgame
Students from Garden City Elementary were a huge "hit" at the Salem Red Sox.  Last Wednesday, 51 1st and 2nd graders sang the National Anthem on the field.  They then got to stay and watch the game from the stands, complete with plenty of hot dogs.  Garden City Elementary was invited because it took part in the Salem Red Sox Reading Program.  More pictures at www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
All Aboard!
Talk about traveling back in time!  From now until the end of the school year, RCPS Kindergarteners are visiting the Transportation Museum in Roanoke.  These trips are to engage students about the history of the Roanoke Valley when it comes to transportation.  The students also learn various SOL skills like Reading, Writing, and History.  
Garden City student wins Spelling Bee
Imani Jackson wasn't acting, she knew how to spell the word "thespian."  The Garden City Elementary 5th Grader won the District Wide Elementary Spelling Bee, held at William Fleming High School.  Imani competed with students from all the city's elementary schools.  She won in 10 rounds.
Madison Middle presents "Annie"
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS A GREAT SHOW. The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow!  James Madison Middle School presents the beloved musical "Annie."  It is about a little orphan in New York City who charms everyone's hearts. 
Spring Cleaning
Band students from Woodrow Wilson Middle School put down their instruments and picked up shovels over the weekend.  Twice a year, the students take part in a community service project where they clean up the Murray Run Greenway, next to Patrick Henry High School.  The students raise money through pledges, that money pays for various band programs. 
District Exhibition Debate
Fresh off its national award, the "Westside Debate Team" will be performing along with debate teams from Fairview, Fishburn, Addison, Jackson, and Breckinridge.  The District Debate Competition will take place 4/18 at William Fleming High School.  The debate topic?  Should Roanoke City Public Schools require students to wear uniforms to school?  The competition begins at 6.
RAMS honors Tuskegee Airman
Dempsey Morgan left a lasting impression on the students at Roanoke Academy for Math & Science.  He spoke to them several times about his experiences as a Tuskegee Airman, a group of African American pilots who fought during World War II.  Morgan died last week at age 93.  RAMS principal Toni Belton was asked to speak at his funeral.  She brought this heart the students made for him.
Madison student wins $500
Talk about a picture perfect gift.  Donovan Starkey, an 8th grader at James Madison Middle, won $500 from the Boys & Girls Club of Southwest Virginia's annual Black History Month Art contest.  Donovan drew a portrait of Malcolm X.  He has already used the money to buy an iPod and take his mother to a nice dinner.
Gone Fishin' from Woodrow Wilson
Students from Woodrow Wilson Middle had a release party of sorts.  For the last 3 months, they've helped grow and maintain trout hatched from eggs.  This week, about 40 6th graders released the trout into the Roanoke River at Wasena Park.  Using a net, they also captured sediment to see what organisms are living in the Roanoke River.  To see more photos, go to www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Westside Debate Team wins national award
Congratulations to "The Westside Debaters."  They've been selected as a first place winner in the 19th annual Magna Awards program.  The award recognizes school districts around the country for outstanding programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement in schools. 
Patrick Henry's Choir performs in New York City
Talk about ending Spring Break on a high note.  Patrick Henry High School Women's Choir and Chamber Choir performed at the famous Riverside Church in New York City.  The students also saw a Broadway show, took a ride to the top of the Empire State Building, and visited the Statue of Liberty.

Students from Patrick Henry and William Fleming High Schools visited a fire station to learn what it takes to be a firefighter and a first responder.  Representatives from the Jefferson College of Health Sciences were on hand to tell the students about a scholarship that is just for graduates of PH and Fleming.  To learn more about the scholarship, call Judith McKeon at 985-9083.
Signing bonuses for new mathematics teachers
The Roanoke City School Board has taken the bold step of offering signing bonuses to help recruit and retain good mathematics teachers.  The bonuses start at $2,000 and go all the way up to $10,000.  For full details and to apply, Click here.
Nikki Giovanni visits Madison Middle
Well-known and respected American poet Nikki Giovanni brought her knowledge and life experiences to students at James Madison Middle.  The poems she read focused on her life growing up in a segregated south and being a civil rights activist.  Dr. Giovanni is a Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech.
Letter from School Board Chairman
School Board Chairman David Carson has been elected to be the next Circuit Court Judge for the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit.  His term begins July 1.  Mr. Carson plans to step down as School Board Chairman at the June 11 School Board meeting.  He wrote a letter to the staff.  To view it, click here.
College Road Trip
Girls basketball players from our five middle schools and some of the high schools hit the road for Spring Break.  The girls went to Penn State, Susquehanna University, UCONN, Harvard University, and many others.  The focus of the trip was to introduce these middle school students to a range of colleges.  Many of the college basketball programs welcomed the group with open arms.
William Fleming student receives Ron Brown Scholarship
Ollie Howie has already been accepted to Harvard University.  Now, paying for it just got a lot easier.  The Fleming senior has been awarded $40,000 through the Ron Brown Scholar Program.  More than 6,000 applied, just 20 receive the scholarship each year.  Ron Brown was the Commerce Secretary who died in a plane crash in 1996.
Breckinridge students to build sculpture at library
You will want to "check out" the Williamson Road Library this spring.  150 Breckinridge Middle School Art students are building a large-scale cubed like sculpture.  The theme will be acrylic paintings of highway signs.  The students started the project this week.  By the end of the school year, it will be placed outside the library for thousands of passerbys to see each day. Play celebrates diversity in RCPS
Students are learning to accept one another's differences through a new play called "Cinderella Eats Rice and Beans."  It's put on by the Roanoke Children's Theatre and is being performed at five elementary schools.  The goal is to celebrate Roanoke's growing Hispanic population and our diversity.  English Language Learners (ELL) are helping to prepare and present the play to students.

Lunch is on us at Noel C. Taylor
It is often said breaking bread brings people together.  With that in mind, Noel C. Taylor Learning Academy has started a parent luncheon program.  Once a month, parents, students, and teachers get together for lunch.  The goal is to increase parent involvement and give teachers a chance to talk with parents about their children's progress.  Thank you to Walmart for donating the food.
Music Award
RCPS named one of the Best Communities for Music Education
Don't mean to toot our own horn but this is pretty cool news.  The NAMM Foundation has named Roanoke one of 2013's Best Communities for Music Education.  Just 307 school districts across the country received this award.  "There is overwhelming research tying music education to higher overall student success in school and in life," said NAMM Foundation Executive Director Mary Luehrsen.
Preserving the history of Lucy Addison
Before it was a middle school, Lucy Addison was a high school.  Now, alumni are coming together for a monument wall project for the school.  It will list all faculty, staff, and alumni of Lucy Addison High School from 1928 to when it closed as a high school in 1973.  "I am truly excited and so happy to be a part of this great endeavor," said Principal Robert Johnson.  Pictured is the steering committee.

"Dance Espanol" ready to take the stage
Thanks for coming out and supporting this great program.  "Dance Espanol" is a new program between RCPS and Southwest Virginia Ballet.  It teaches both dance and Spanish.  Students from Morningside, Lincoln Terrace, Wasena and Highland Park Elementary came together for a performance at William Fleming H.S. 
Another successful year for "Reality Check"
What is it like to be a grownup, to have to pay bills--a mortgage or car payment?  Goodwill helps answers those questions through a program called "Reality Check".  It teaches middle and high school students about careers and finances.  Students get a set amount of money and they quickly learn how to budget.  The program wrapped up for the year at Forest Park Academy.
Two Roanoke students win Regional Science Fair
The Western Virginia Regional Science Fair was held at Roanoke College over the weekend.  Joseph Johnson, a Patrick Henry H.S. and Governor's School student, is one of the Grand Award winners.  William Hairfield (pictured), a William Fleming H.S. and Governor's School student, is another Grand Award winners.  Both will compete internationally in Phoenix in May. Easy as Pi(e)

Concert to benefit CCAP
Thank you to everyone who came to the "Trane  Music Festival."  This event raised more than $20,000 for the Community College Access Program, (CCAP) at Virginia Western Community College.  Thanks to Patrick Henry, William Fleming, Salem, and Franklin County High Schools for performing.
Governor and Board of Education recognize 4 RCPS Schools
Crystal Spring Elementary has won a 2013 Board of Education Excellence Award.  Fishburn Park, Grandin Court, and Wasena Elementary Schools each received a 2013 Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award.  151 schools statewide were honored.  "Each of these schools are setting the standard we should expect for every school in the Commonwealth," said Governor Bob McDonnell. 
William Fleming High School is off to see the wizard
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS A GREAT SHOW:  The Colonel's Theatre Company presents "The Wiz," the Broadway Musical version of the Wizard of Oz.  You can expect a  little rock, gospel, and even soul music.  The Munchkins are played by elementary school students. 
William Fleming High School wins big at marketing competition
Do you know how to sell yourself?  You may want to contact the marketing students at William Fleming.  The school's Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) won 8 awards at the state marketing competition in Virginia Beach.  The awards include the Fortune 500 Award, a Community Service Award, the Super Star Chapter Award, and Outstanding Advisor Award.
ROTEC Extravaganza sees record crowds
Students at the Roanoke Technical Education Center (ROTEC) have many talents.  Last week, those talents were on full display at the 5th Annual ROTEC Extravaganza.  The fundraiser, held at the Jefferson Center, had the largest crowd ever.  It raised more than $10,000 for ROTEC.  The money will pay for things like uniforms, and scholarships.
STEM Expo educates RCPS students
Wouldn't it be cool to operate your own robot?  RCPS students got the chance at the annual STEM Expo at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.  Students got hands-on demonstrations about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics from Virginia Tech, among others.  Engineering students from ROTEC/William Fleming also got to showcase their own robot!  Pictured are Woodrow Wilson students posing with a batman like robot.
Wasena Elementary receives $500
Exxon Mobil is a big supporter of our schools.  Wasena Elementary is the second Roanoke school in a matter of weeks to receive an Educational Alliance Grant from Exxon Mobil.  Wasena will use the $500 to buy materials for Mathematics and Science.  "We are truly grateful to Exxon for this generous gift.  We couldn't do it without these great community partners." said Wasena Principal Babette Cribbs.

Baseball team's fundraiser is a big "hit"
Who doesn't like wings?  That was clearly the case last Thursday night at AllSports Cafe.  Patrick Henry High School's Baseball Team held the first annual "On Deck" fundraiser.  More than 50 came out for a night of wings and a good cause.  The money raised will pay for equipment and field maintenance.  The team took in nearly $700. 
Expansion plans unveiled for Virginia Heights
Virginia Heights Elementary is more than 90 years old and cramped for space.  The school is about to get a modern makeover.  The project includes new classrooms, an art room, moving the library, a multi-purpose room, as well as eliminating the modular unit.  Construction will begin this Spring and should be completed by the start of the next school year.
Fun Fitness at Fishburn

Yoda visits Highland Park Elementary

Roanoke Children's Theatre delivers powerful message
Teen depression and suicide are not easy topics.  RCPS, the Roanoke Children's Theatre, and several mental health agencies have joined forces to address the issue.  8th graders from the five middle schools are going to see the play "Eric and Elliot" at the Taubman Museum of Art.  The story is of hope and the warning sides of depression.  The goal is to show students that feeling sad is not uncommon and there is always help at the school.
RCPS Superintendent is honored by VH1
Superintendent Rita Bishop was honored in Los Angeles by the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.  Dr. Bishop is the recipient of the Administrator Award for Distinguished Support of Music Education.  "Dr. Rita Bishop's work has been a prime example of what public school music programs should strive for," said Paul Cothran (left), Vice President and Executive Director of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation.
Crystal Spring gets $1,000 check
Crystal Spring Elementary is 3 for 3.  For the third year in a row, the school has received $1,000 from Exxon Mobil.  The school has to use the money for technology in Mathematics and Science.  Crystal Spring will buy additional Smartboards.  "I'm grateful to have the financial and community support from Exxon," said Principal Kathy Tate. 
And the winner is....

Lucy Addison principal is honored during Black History Month
The Urban Professional League (UPL) highlights exceptional efforts and accomplishments of young African American professionals within the Roanoke Valley.  This year, the group is honoring Lucy Addison Middle School Principal Robert Johnson for his contribution and tireless efforts in the area of Education.  Jerel Rhodes, a guidance counselor at Forest Park Academy, is also being honored by UPL.  Congratulations to both!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. Forest Park Academy was the place to be Thursday night.  The Patrick Henry High School Jazz Ensemble held a concert to benefit Forest Park's annual trip to Washington D.C.  Nearly $700 was raised.  Thank you to all who came out!

Woodrow Wilson student wins Spelling Bee
Could you spell gelato?  Isabella Perez, an 8th grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle, knows the word all too well.  It was the winning word in this year's citywide Spelling Bee.  Perez won the prize in the 20th round.  She now competes in the Regional Spelling Bee next month in Roanoke.
Masterclass with a Maestro
When he's not conducting the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra or the Long Island Philharmonic, you may find David Wiley in one of our schools.  This week, he taught a masterclass at Patrick Henry High School.  "We are truly honored that someone with this talent would take time to meet with our students and help us we strive to do better," said PH Band Teacher Alex Schmitt.  Wiley plans to teach similar classes at other schools in the future.
PBS Documentary features RCPS
This week, PBS aired a documentary about school safety and part of it highlighted Roanoke City Public Schools.  During Ken Trump's recent trip to Roanoke, a film crew followed the school safety expert as he inspected Roanoke Academy for Math & Science.  Superintendent Rita Bishop was also interviewed for the documentary. 
Garden City Elementary is on the run!
Talk about girl power.  Garden City Elementary is the first Roanoke School to participate in a program called "Girls on the Run."  It's an organization run by volunteers that teaches young girls about healthy living and self confidence.  Seven girls are currently enrolled for the twice a week sessions.  At the end of the program, they will all run a 5K in May!
Presidential visit for Presidents Day
The 16th President of the United States showed up at Fishburn Park Elementary Friday.  Abraham Lincoln spoke to several classes about his presidency and the Civil War.  The school held various activities to celebrate Presidents Day which is Monday. 
William Fleming High School has a new head football coach
Football season may be months away but there is plenty of excitement at William Fleming High School.  Bobby Martin has been named Fleming's new head football coach.  Martin played football at Virginia Tech and has more than 20 years coaching experience.  "This is a great school and I'm looking forward to many successful seasons," said Martin.

What would it be like to get a letter from the president?  William Fleming High School Senior Ollie Howie can tell you.  He has won the President's Volunteer Service Award.  Ollie received a letter from President Obama congratulating him on his accomplishment.

RCPS + is a go!
UPDATE:  The Roanoke City School Board approved RCPS +, a 6 week summer reading, mathematics, and science-rich educational opportunity.   The program is optional for K-8 students and will begin shortly after the end of this school year.  RCPS + will be free to students and transportation will be provided.  "This is a great educational opportunity for our students and another example of our School Board putting students first," said Superintendent Rita Bishop.
School Board Appreciation Month
The Roanoke City School Board got quite a surprise at its meeting this month.  In recognition of School Board Appreciation Month, students from Roanoke Academy for Math and Science made Board members special art projects.  A big thank you to Art Teacher Jennifer Shamy and her students for these works of art.  And a big thank you to our School Board!
Lincoln Terrace/Lucy Addison join forces
How do you prepare elementary school kids for middle school?  It's a question being answered at Lincoln Terrace Elementary.  Twice a month, male students from Lincoln Terrace and Lucy Addison Middle School get together during the school day.  It's a chance for Addison 8th graders to be good role models to 4th and 5th graders at Lincoln Terrace.  They also help prepare them for a life in middle school.  They do various activities like play basketball and instructional work.
The Wright Kids perform at Fairview
They were made famous by "America's Got Talent" and today The Wright Kids took their act to Fairview Elementary.  The Wright Kids are from Franklin County and range in age from 16 to as young as 7.  They were at Fairview thanks to the Roanoke Symphony's School Ensemble Series.  Bravo!  For more pictures, go to www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
Pasta for Pennies
Dig into your pockets because Garden City Elementary could use your pennies.  The school is collecting spare change for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The program is called "Pasta for Pennies."  The class that collects the most change will get a free pasta meal from Olive Garden.  The school is collecting pennies until Friday.  Students hope to raise $750.  For more pictures, go to www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools

Patrick Henry principal announces retirement
They say all good things must come to an end.  With that in mind, Patrick Henry Principal Connie Ratcliffe plans to retire at the end of the school year.  She has been with Roanoke City Public Schools for 28 years, the last six as principal at PH.  Her accomplishments include opening the new Patrick Henry, expanding the fine arts program, offering more AP classes, and having PH on "Newsweek's Best High Schools List." 
Patrick Henry student signs to play football at Virginia Tech
"Go Hokies" could be heard throughout the halls of Patrick Henry High School last Wednesday.  David Prince officially signed to play football at Virginia Tech next year.  Prince says playing for the Hokies is a dream come true.  "If you told me four years ago that I would be playing for Virginia Tech I would have said it was a long shot," said Prince.  For more pictures of the signing, go to www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools  
Virginia Heights receives $1,000
Janet Freese of Roanoke won $1,000 from Towers Shopping Center.  As part of her prize, she got to pick a deserving school to also receive a thousand bucks.  Since she lives in the neighborhood, she chose Virginia Heights Elementary.  The school plans to use the money to buy math materials.  Thank you to Mrs. Freese and Towers Shopping Center for their generosity!
Mentoring middle school men
When they're not on the rails, workers from Norfolk Southern can often be found at Breckinridge Middle School. Once a month, they visit the school to mentor young men as part of the "Caboose After School Program."  These mentors host guest speakers and help with homework but they also have lots of fun activities.  They've even been known to hold etiquette classes!
Dr. Rita Bishop is honored by her peers
Superintendent Rita Bishop has been named Region 6 "Superintendent of the Year."  Her colleagues in the area decided she should get this truly great honor.  "It's always best to have something come from your peers," said Bishop.  She will now compete for Virginia's "Superintendent of the Year."

National School Counseling Week
This week, we say thanks to our school counselors as part of National School Counseling Week.  Roanoke City Public Schools has 44 school counselors who help students achieve success through a variety of activities.  They include Character Education, anti-bullying efforts, academic and career planning as well as assisting students and families with personal and social issues.  Let's show a big appreciation to all school counselors.

Addison hits the slopes
When they're not hard at work in the classroom, there's a good chance these Lucy Addison Middle School students are on the mountain.  The school's Outdoor Adventure Club recently had its first ski trip of the year.  The club has about 50 members and does many activities throughout the year including hiking, canoeing, and rock climbing.  The students are going on their first overnight camping trip this Spring!

Unexpected delivery at Morningside
They may just be kids but this week, 3rd graders at Morningside Elementary are more like mother hens.  The students are having to take care of newly hatched chicks, who were born two days earlier than expected.  While in the incubator, students had to turn the eggs 3 times a day and check the temperature.  The 4H Extension Office provided the eggs and the incubator.

Book features Fallon Park
We all know Fallon Park Elementary is a great school, now a book proves it.  The book is called "Teaching Practices from America's Best Urban Schools."  It quotes students as saying the teachers at Fallon make learning fun.  The book is published by the National Center for Urban School Transformation.  The group gave Fallon an Urban Education Award in 2009.
New club at Lincoln Terrace focuses on Community Service
Lincoln Terrace is the first elementary school in Roanoke to have a Beta Club.  It  is a national organization that promotes high academic achievement, character, service, and leadership.  Twelve Lincoln Terrace 5th graders make up the newly formed club.  The students have already completed their first community service project, making Christmas cards for a local nursing home.  They're working on their next project.
Spring is in the air

Big kids helping little kids
Need proof teenagers really do care?  Every Thursday, five Patrick Henry High School students start their day down the street at Virginia Heights Elementary.  They volunteer helping English Language Learners (ELL).  By reading them stories and playing games, teachers have noticed these ELL students are more enthusiastic and are making a lot of progress.  The kids clearly enjoy it and the PH students are learning they can make a difference in someone's life.
Westside 'Steps Up'
Westside Elementary is one of the few elementary schools in the country to have a Step team.   Step-dancing is a form of percussive dance in which the person's entire body is used as an instrument to produce rhythms and sounds through footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. The Step team will perform at Virginia Tech and in Greensboro in March. Two RCPS students head to Richmond
Wouldn't it be cool to have your classroom be the State Capital?  Robert Kreft of Woodrow Wilson Middle and Will Mason of Patrick Henry High School are spending 7 weeks in Richmond.  They get to shadow state lawmakers and see how bills become law.  Only a few statewide are picked each year to take part in this prestigious program.  Here is Robert Kreft posing with Delegate Chris Head of Roanoke. 
Virginia Tech honors Preston Park students
Three Preston Park students placed in the 8th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Poster and Essay Contest sponsored by Virginia Tech.  The contest had 549 poster submissions.  Congratulations to Morgan Doyle, Satchel Venable, and Tyriq Poindexter.  They were recognized at a brunch on the Virginia Tech campus.
RCPS maintenance crews answer the call
Thank you to our maintenance crews for their hard work during winter weather. They work countless hours plowing school parking lots, shoveling sidewalks, and laying down salt.  We appreciate all of their efforts. This is a picture of Nat Franklin who does maintenance at Central Office. 
National Security Expert gives our schools a checkup
Ken Trump, a school safety consultant, returned to Roanoke last week.  A lot of the current security measures in our schools were developed by Mr. Trump.  During his visit, he and his team reviewed and even tested security at several schools.  "Roanoke City Schools are ahead of the curve.  They've been walking the walk and talking the talk for years," said Trump.  Mr. Trump came up with several suggestions to improve security. "No option is off the table," said Superintendent Rita Bishop.

SCLC honors William Fleming High School Principal
The Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) honored Archie Freeman with one of its "Drum Major for Justice Awards" at the 18th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Banquet.  "It is an honor to serve the students, parents, community, faculty, and staff at RCPS.  We must keep the vision by providing an opportunity for students to be successful.  Let's work together in achieving this goal," said Principal Freeman.
VH1 honors Superintendent Rita Bishop
VH1 Save The Music Foundation has selected Dr. Rita Bishop as the recipient of the 7th Annual Administrator Award for Distinguished Support of Music Education.  Dr, Bishop will pick up her award at a conference in Los Angeles next month. Jaclyn Shea (left) of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation surprised Dr. Bishop with the announcement at a School Board meeting.
Two RCPS teachers receive national honors
It isn't easy becoming a nationally certified teacher.  There are only 100,000 nationwide, 27 in Roanoke City.  Two Preston Park Elementary teachers have joined the ranks.  Kerin Mikowicz (pictured) and Candace Holdren are now National Board Certified Teachers. 
Winter work is wonderful
While most of us were enjoying our Winter break, RCPS maintenance crews were busy completing several projects.  The work included new vertical blinds at Fallon Park Elementary as well as Roanoke Academy for Math and Science.  Crystal Spring Elementary got new windows and a security gate.  Some of Round Hill Elementary got new carpeting.  Crews also resurfaced the gym floor at Breckinridge Middle (pictured).
School security gets a second look
The Roanoke City School Board and Superintendent Rita Bishop believe student safety is the #1 priority.  In the last five years, the school system has spent $1.2 Million improving security at our schools.  School Safety Consultant Ken Trump, a national expert, helped develop the school system's security plans.  This week, he will return to review our security and make recommendations for additional measures.

More than 3,000 children in Roanoke City are about to get free books.  RCPS received 11,356 books through the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program and First Book, two national children's literacy nonprofits. 
Fun in the sun at Woodrow
Before Winter Break, Woodrow Wilson Middle held its annual "Holiday Beachball Volleyball Classic."  86 teams took part in the day long tournament.  To participate, students had to have good attendance and good behavior the last few weeks.  The team that won will get a pizza party in January.
Support for Sandy Hook
James Madison Middle School students wanted to do something to help.  They held a powder puff game (similar to flag football) to raise money for the Connecticut United Way.  Madison students paid 50 cents to attend the game and ended up raising about $300 for the victims' families.  Students and staff also wore green and white to show their support.  The school took a group picture that will be sent along with the check.
Hats for Highland
Churches throughout the Roanoke Valley help Roanoke City Schools on a daily basis.  We call it Congregations In Action (CIA).  They volunteer their time and resources.  For example, many churches provide snack packs that go home with children every weekend.  This week, Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke gave kindergarteners at Highland Park Elementary knitted hats.  RCPS greatly appreciates all the churches who help our students.
Spanish and dance come together
The Southwest Virginia Ballet has done outreach programs in our schools for years.  This year, Pedro Szalay, Artistic Director, is doing something different.  He's teaching Spanish and Dance at four elementary schools.  In addition to learning a new language and a new art form, the students also get a lesson about discipline and team work.  In March, all four schools will come together for a performance at William Fleming High School.

Math and Muffins
At Virginia Heights Elementary, parents of 3rd and 4th graders were invited to the school for an unique program.  It's called "math and muffins."  The idea is to help increase math scores at the school by increasing parental involvement.  During the program, parents and students had to work together to solve math problems.  They also made math games that can be played at home. 
Holiday Haul Toy Drive helps Hurricane Sandy victims
THANK YOU ALL WHO DONATED!  WSLS-TV held a toy drive this holiday season to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.  RCPS had a drop-off box in the lobby at William Fleming High School.  Friday night, students from Fleming and Woodrow Wilson Middle School delivered the toys live on WSLS.  The toys have already been distributed up north.

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE SHOW.  Every year, WDBJ-TV airs the holiday show "Sounds of the Season."  It highlights local bands playing holiday music.  This year, the show featured Jackson Middle's choir and orchestra.

Cookies for a Cause at Patrick Henry
The PHriends Club at Patrick Henry High School is collecting toys for "Toys for Tots."  It is a program by the U.S. Marine Reserves to provide toys to needy children.  PH students who donated toys got a package of free cookies.  A U.S. Marine was on hand to support Patrick Henry's toy drive.

Several of our school choirs have been invited to perform at Carilion Clinic Roanoke Memorial Hospital during the holidays.  It is a chance to provide a little cheer to employees and patients as well as showcase the talent of our students.  This is William Fleming High School's choir singing at the hospital. 
Monterey
Monterey Elementary makes a trip around the world
Monterey held its 10th annual Multicultural Day.  It is a chance to highlight the school's diversity and honor the international students.  Students visited stations to learn about different countries and they got a taste of various international foods.  19 different countries are currently represented at Monterey. 
Nutcracker performers visit Lincoln Terrace and Hurt Park
Students from Hurt Park, Wasena, Lincoln Terrace, Highland Park, and Morningside got to see "The Nutracker" for free.  Before they went, a ballerina from the Southwest Virginia Ballet read to students at Lincoln Terrace and Hurt Park.  The Sugar Plum Fairy is Patrick Henry High School Junior Meredith Kelderhouse.   SunTrust and Carilion sponsored the free tickets. 
More RCPS students are saying "checkmate"
Most of our schools have a chess club and more students than ever are taking part.  Students play the game once a week after school.  Chess teaches them logical thinking skills and how to solve problems.  Five students from Patrick Henry, Woodrow Wilson, Breckinridge, and Madison just competed in the United States Chess Federation Championship in Orlando, Florida.  Phillip Harmon, a PH senior, placed 2nd in his classification group.
21st Century Community Learning Centers expand
13 RCPS Schools are now recipients of 21st Century grants, federal money that funds after school programs. It is part remediation, part enrichment. Students receive extra help with their school work and they have fun.  Community partners like the Taubman Museum of Art and the Jefferson Center put on activities that are both exciting and educational.  The number of students participating keeps going up!
CCAP is changing lives
Samira Fudge and K.J. Sims are taking part in the Community College Access Program (CCAP).  It allows qualifying graduating seniors from Roanoke City to have their tuition paid for at Virginia Western Community College.  Fudge graduated from Patrick Henry High School, "Who doesn't want to go to school for two years for free?" said Fudge.  Sims graduated from William Fleming High School.  "CCAP has actually saved me tons of money because if I had gone out of state, that would be costing me $20,000 per semester," said Sims.
Jackson Middle wins VH1 music contest
Congratulations to Jackson Middle's choir and orchestra.  They won the 2nd place Grand Prize from VH1's Save the Music Foundation.  They had to record a version of Ingrid Michaelson's song "Blood Brothers."  While they placed sixth in public voting, Michaelson chose Jackson as the 2nd place winner.  The school wins 25 song books and an acoustic guitar. Community meeting set to discuss expansion of Round Hill Elementary
The public is invited to an informational meeting on Monday evening, December 10, 2012 at 6:30 P.M., in the Multipurpose Room at Round Hill.  At the meeting, we will share preliminary plans for the expansion of the school.  Plenty of time will be set aside for questions and dialogue.
Lucy Addison basketball tournament benefits RCPS students
Thank you to all of those who made this year's basketball tournament a huge success.  A lot of toys, clothing, and canned food were collected for families of RCPS students.

William Fleming basketball player signs National Letter of Intent
Ryjae Anderson will play next year at Saint Peter's University in New Jersey.  Anderson plays basketball for William Fleming High School.  "This is a dream come true for me but before I head north, I'm looking forward to my last season as a Colonel.  We are determined to win it all this year," said Anderson. 
Cookies and milk for United Way
Six schools had 100% staff participation for the United Way Campaign. They include Noel C. Taylor, Roanoke Academy, Morningside, Hurt Park, Forest Park, and the Governor's School. These schools received free milk and cookies, generously made by our culinary arts students.
Franks at Fairview
Students were treated to a tailgate party for meeting the Accelerated Reader Challenge Goal.  Fairview students read a total of 8,984,231 words.  These were the top readers!
Crystal Spring's Turkey Bowl is a huge success
Every year, Crystal Spring Elementary has a football game to raise money for the Rescue Mission.  This year, the staff, students, and parents raised $2,850!  Since the Turkey Bowl started six years ago, Crystal Spring has raised more than $10,000 for the Rescue Mission. 
Lucy Addison Middle Adopts a Stream
The Ecology Club at Lucy Addison is taking part in Virginia's Adopt-a-Stream Program.  27 students recently cleaned up Lick Run Stream at Washington Park. They plan to be back several times throughout the school year
Students receive free dental screening
Cologate's Bright Smiles, Bright Future Dental Van visited Westside Elementary and Roanoke Academy for Math & Science. Students received a dental screening as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste. The Roanoke Chapter of Links Incorporated put this event together.
Preschoolers receive free books
Each preschool student is getting four books provided by RCPS, Roanoke City's Dept. of Social Services, and Star City Reads. This is Highland Park Elementary receiving its shipment.
Patrick Henry's yearbook is one of the best in the state
The Roanoke City School Board recognized Patrick Henry's yearbook staff.  It received 1st place from the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for its yearbook.  111 schools in Virginia competed. 
Running clubs are a runaway success
More of our schools now have running clubs. Crystal Spring Elementary started one this year for 4th and 5h grade. Students run once a week for about 30 minutes. Several recently ran their first 5K. "They've blown me away," said PE Teacher Channing Groff.
ROTEC students help the needy this Thanksgiving
William Fleming and Patrick Henry High School students collected more than a ton (2000 pounds) of food.  Health and Medical Science Students from ROTEC and members from the Roanoke Elks Lodge prepared the food for delivery. They helped 91 families.

Larry Stacy finished 3rd in Food Marketing at the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) Leadership Competition.  He will now compete at the State Leadership Conference in Virginia Beach in March.

State Lawmakers visit Roanoke City Schools
It was "Take Your Legislator to School Day" at William Fleming High School. State Lawmakers heard about the successes and challenges of RCPS from the School Board and City Council. Delegate Greg Habeeb and Delegate Joseph Yost also got a tour from 
some Fleming students.
Schools hold Veterans Day celebrations
Lincoln Terrace Elementary invited veterans to lunch. William Fleming ROTC students placed American flags on the graves of veterans at a local cemetery. Wasena Elementary invited veterans to school for a special ceremony. Breckinridge Middle sent cards to veterans at the VA
Hospital in Salem.
Fishburn gets fit!
Fishburn Park Elementary has started a fitness club.  Nearly 70 students and staff members have signed up so far.  They meet twice a week before school.  They play games and exercise for about 30 minutes. 
Patrick Henry High School Senior wins prestigious award
Volleyball Player Caroline Brailsford has won Wendy's High School Heisman Award. It recognizes performance on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. "It is a honor to be picked from Virginia," said Brailsford.
Anti-bullying message comes to Morningside
Carol McCloud, an author from Michigan visited Morningside Elementary.  She is called the "Bucket Lady." She encourages students to fill their buckets by doing and saying nice things for other people.  3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students got a free copy of her book. 
Fire Prevention Week Art Contest Winners Announced
13 students won the annual art contest by the Roanoke City Fire Dept. "It's important to teach kids about fire safety and what better way to reinforce what they've learned than having them create works of art depicting fire
safety messages," said Chief David Hoback.
A new tune at Highland Park Elementary
Highland Park now has marimba music. It is a percussion instrument made with wooden bars.  Students even helped to make the instruments. "They have a real vibrant sound.  They're fun to play," said Music Teacher George Dickenson. 
RCPS honors Doris Ennis with a special tribute
Ms. Ennis has been with RCPS for 50 years.  The School Board threw her a special surprise dinner before the PH/Fleming football game.  Ms. Ennis also did the coin toss on the field. "I don't know what I would do without Roanoke City Schools," said Ms. Ennis.
William Fleming High School holds mock election
During lunch, Fleming students got to vote on a computer for the presidential candidates. Teachers say students have been engaged. "They are all really informed for people that age," said Government Teacher Chris Ingle.
Young Politicians at Preston Park
Preston Park is one of the few elementary schools to have a Student Council.  Students vote for president and secretary.  "It allows our students to participate in the democratic process, but it also allows our students to play a role in our school community," said Principal Eric Fisher. 
Patrick Henry students hold presidential debate
PH's Young Republicans and Young Democrats had a debate at school. "It's important for all of our students to be informed and engaged citizens. I'm proud of my students for working towards this goal," said Principal
Connie Ratcliffe.
Opera Roanoke donates tree to Patrick Henry High School
Every year, Opera Roanoke plants a tree during National Opera Week. This year, the opera chose Patrick Henry.  The tree is honored to remember Seth Williamson, long time music reviewer for The Roanoke Times.
Fallon Park Elementary holds Fall Harvest Day
The school held its annual celebration on Halloween.  It was a chance for teachers and students to dress up.  Several staff members wore Sesame Street costumes. The PTA also provided inflatable bouncy houses for kids to play in.
Pretty in Pink at Virginia Heights Elementary
The staff at Virginia Heights took part in a pink event at school.  Many teachers wore pink to honor the  two staff members who are breast cancer survivors.  "I am proud to be part of a staff who supports each other in a
variety of ways," said Principal Linda Butts.
School Board Chairman Wears Many Hats
When David Carson isn't at the office, in a courtroom, or at a school board meeting, you can often find him at one of our schools.  Every Friday, the school board chairman reads to elementary school kids.  "He does a wonderful job of engaging students while he reads.  It is truly
a treat," said Fairview Principal April Plympton.
Wasena Elementary Goes International
Wasena now has English Language Learners (ELL students). The school recently held an international potluck.  Families brought dishes from their native countries and students sang in Spanish. It was a chance for everyone to learn about different cultures. 
Roanoke City Schools Win Red Ribbon Week Awards
Hurt Park Elementary and James Madison Middle won awards from the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coaltion (RAYSAC) as part of Red Ribbon Week.  It is a campaign to encourage students to stay
away from drugs. 
Roanoke students say "No to Drugs"
During Red Ribbon Week, many Roanoke Schools took part in the nationwide campaign to encourage students to stay off drugs.  Madison Middle won an award from RAYSAC for Red Ribbon Week.
Breckinridge Student Stands Up To Cancer
Breckinridge Middle School student Bryce Moore has shaved his head to show support to his cousin who has leukemia.  "The Breckinridge community is extremely proud of Bryce.  He is an example of how one small act of kindness can touch us all," said Principal

Patrick Henry students help Habitat for Humanity
UPDATE:  The students raised $1,000 for Habitat for Humanity.  Five choirs, including Patrick Henry High School's, performed to raise money for the charity. 
William Fleming High School Students Write Their Own Play
THIS WEEKEND:  It is called "Circus of the Night."  It features demented clowns, colorful cartwheeling dancers, and a fun house.  Go see it October 26 and 27 at 7:00 P.M. at William Fleming High School.
A Shakespeare classic gets a modern makeover
FINAL WEEKEND:  The Patrick Henry High School Theater Department presents "Midsummer/Jersey."  It is a modern take of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Go see it October 26-27, at 7:30 P.M. 
Madison Middle School students hold a canned food drive
As part of Red Ribbon Week, Madison Middle is trying to collect a canned food from each student.  If that happens, there will be well over 600 cans!!  The cans will then be donated to Roanoke's Rescue Mission.  The
food drive ends Friday. 
RCPS Schools take part in statewide earthquake drill
Thursday was the Great SouthEast ShakeOut, the first simultaneous earthquake drill held in Virginia.  Students across Roanoke City learned the best response during an earthquake is to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A news anchor?  A nurse?  A police officer?  Students at Monterey Elementary got a taste of these professions at the school's first ever career day.  Representatives from Carilion, Roanoke City Police Department, WDBJ-TV, and WSLS-TV were on hand.

Roanoke City Firefighters teach students about fire dangers
This is National Fire Prevention Month. The Roanoke City Fire Dept. is doing puppet shows at our elementary schools to teach students what to do during a fire. The theme is to have two ways to get out of a burning home.

Students from Hurt Park and Westside Elementary certainly can. Both schools had a reading program this past summer where students had to write their own book. The Superintendent and the School Board congratulates these young authors.
Lucy Addison Students care about the environment
The Ecology Club at Lucy Addison recently marked storm drains near the school.  The messages warn the community about the dangers of dumping waste into the Roanoke River Watershed.

Middle School students get a reality check about money
As part of the reality check program, middle school students are learning a lesson about budgeting. They receive a profession, a set amount of money, and then must pay their monthly bills without going over. 
Diversity continues to be a big strength of Roanoke City Schools
The school system held its first ever district wide conference for parents of English Language Learners (ELL).  The goal was to build trust and communication between RCPS and ELL families.
Lucy Addison Middle School students get to talk to NASA
Through a video conference, students got to speak to astronaut and Director of NASA's Kennedy Space Center.  Bob Cabana told them if they want to be an astronaut they need to do well in school, especially in math
and science.
